Board Parlor is a board game directory and a set of browser games you can play alone, against the computer or with friends. This page explains what we store and why. The short version: we keep what's needed to run your account and games, we don't sell anything, and there are no ads on the site. We do use one advertising measurement tag on the games pages, explained below.

Without an account

You can browse the directory and play every game as a guest. Game settings, tutorial progress and the games you finish are kept in your browser (localStorage), not on our server. If you play online with a friend, the game room (its moves and any chat messages) is stored on our server and deleted after a day or two without activity.

With an account

• Account: your username, a securely hashed password (we can't read it), and your email address only if you give one.
• Games: the games you finish (which game, the result, vs computer or people, when and how long), used for your stats, levels and XP.
• Friends: your friends, friend requests and game invitations, and who invited you (if you signed up with a friend's link).
• Presence: when you were last on the site and which game you're playing, shown to your friends.
• Profile looks you pick, and in the directory any comments and favourites you add.

Who can see what: your username, level and profile looks are visible to everyone. Your stats are visible to you and your friends. Your email is never shown to anyone.

Cookies

Cookies needed for the site to work: a session cookie, a security (CSRF) cookie, and a "stay signed in" cookie when you're signed in.

On the games pages we also set two cookies for the advertising measurement described below (_uetsid and _uetvid). Those are the only advertising or analytics cookies on the site, and we don't use them to build a profile of you here.

Advertising measurement

There are no ads on Board Parlor, and there never have been. We do pay to advertise Board Parlor elsewhere, and to find out whether that is worth doing we use the Microsoft Advertising UET tag on the games pages (boardparlor.com/games/). It lets us count how many people who clicked one of our ads went on to create an account. We see counts, not a list of who did what.

The tag is Microsoft's code, not ours. It tells Microsoft the page you looked at, your IP address, your browser and where you came from, and it sets the two cookies named above; Microsoft decides how long they last. What Microsoft does with that is covered by the Microsoft Privacy Statement, and you can turn off their advertising personalisation at Microsoft ad settings.

If you would rather it did not load at all, any tracker blocker or browser privacy setting will stop it. The site and every game work exactly the same without it.

Server logs

Like most websites, our server keeps short-lived logs (IP address, the page asked for, time, browser) to keep the site secure and working. They are not used to build profiles of anyone.

Where it's stored

On our server in an Amazon Web Services data centre, with daily backups kept for two weeks. Apart from the advertising measurement described above, we don't share your data with anyone, except when the law requires it.

Deleting your data

You can delete your account at any time from the Account page. That removes your account, stats, friends, invitations, XP, looks and any feedback you sent us straight away (backups roll over within two weeks). Anything you posted in the forum stays, with your name taken off it. Removing it would tear holes in other people's conversations. Guest data lives in your browser: clearing the site's data removes it.

Children

Board Parlor is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data. If you think a child has made an account, contact us and we'll delete it.
