Two surveyors chart five trails through the wilderness: Ridge, River, Marsh, Dune and Pine. Each trail you walk must pay for itself, and the higher total after the last round wins.
Your turn
Put down one card, either on one of your own trails or face up on that trail's heap in the middle.
Take one card, from the stack or from the top of any heap, but not the card you have just thrown.
Trails
Markers run from 2 to 10. On your own trail each marker must be higher than the last one you put there, so a trail only ever climbs.
Pledges are laid before any marker on that trail. One doubles what the trail scores, two triples it, three quadruple it, losses included.
You never have to walk a trail. A trail you never start is worth nothing, which is often the right answer.
Scoring a trail
Add the markers, subtract 20 for outfitting it, then multiply by the pledges.
A trail of eight or more cards earns a 20-point bonus on top.
So a trail with 8 + 9 is 17 − 20 = −3. The same trail with a pledge is −6. Add a 10 and it turns: 27 − 20 = 7, doubled to 14.
The round
The round ends the moment the last card leaves the stack; the turn in progress is the last one.
Scores are added up and the cards are dealt again. After the last round, the higher total wins.
