Hearts

Four players, one standard deck, 13 cards each. You play against three computer players. Avoid taking points. The game ends when anyone reaches 100 (or 50); the lowest total wins.

Passing

Before each hand, choose 3 cards to pass: to the left in the first hand, then to the right, then across, then no passing. The cycle repeats. Tap cards to pick them, then tap Pass.

Tricks

Whoever holds the 2♣ leads it to the first trick. Play goes clockwise. You must follow suit (play the suit that was led) if you can; if you can't, play any card. The highest card of the suit led wins the trick, and the winner leads next. Aces are high.

• No points on the first trick: if you have no clubs, you can't play a heart or the Q♠ unless your hand has nothing else.
• Hearts can't be led until a heart has been played on an earlier trick (hearts are "broken"), unless you have only hearts left.

Scoring

Each heart you take is 1 point; the Q♠ is 13. That's 26 points in every hand.

Shooting the moon: if one player takes all 13 hearts and the Q♠, they score 0 and everyone else scores 26.

Tips

• Pass the Q♠, A♠ and K♠ unless you hold plenty of low spades, and high hearts.
• Getting rid of a whole suit lets you throw away points when it's led.
• Duck: play the highest card that still loses the trick.
